Hi all. I am taking down infosec.place for a bit. Back soon.

Sorry about the infosec.place outage. What I expected to be a routine 30 second upgrade has taken me 3 hours to get back to the prior version...

@clemenceau yeah, I keep it updated - I think last time was a few weeks ago and I did have to deal with the elixir version. Does OTP abstract that away?

*** INFOSEC.PLACE UPDATE ***

I just applied the latest version of Akkoma to this instance which fixes some security issues. It looks like upgrade was not clean, but it's early and I'm not able to reproduce the issue, nor see any signs that the upgrade didn't work, but if you run into a problem, please let me know.

Hello Infosec.place. I am taking the server down for a while this evening to migrate to a new (and less expensive) server.

@clemenceau I don’t understand the sluggishness, but on a system with more cores it does ok. I don’t know how it will scale, though

@clemenceau I followed the instructions here: https://docs.akkoma.dev/stable/configuration/optimizing_beam/ for dedicated hardware (because it's running on a 16 core, 128GB system bare metal) and that seemed to have helped a lot. It's still noticeably more sluggish than my mastodon instance, which has about 500x more active user accounts.

One thing I am not a fan of with akkoma is the way the timelines jump. The smooth way mastodon adds posts one at a time to the top of the timeline is very nice in comparison.

I fiddled with some config settings on Infosec.place and it feels much less sluggish now. I need to get the search engine off the server - that thing hits the server pretty hard

If your $dayjob is at all related to security, I'd love to hear from you about what type of mobile phone you currently rely on.

I've never really seen a data-based breakdown of the answer to this question, and I'm genuinely curious. Thanks!

@mawhrin huh. I’m guessing the author’s online marketing business probably doesn’t make much money if businesses move to mastodon

@buherator I think it works, though the lines between the two are blurred. If Lana is in the same place as Cyril, she has to worry about being shot by hunters, and likewise, Cyril is at risk of being shot by Troy because he's highly visible.

Otherwise, I think it works

@Tindra I see what you mean... The akkoma/pleroma front end doesn't handle streaming updates as well as mastodon's web front end
