This xz backdoor thing reminds me of a story I heard from friends that worked at a tech company that made cell phones. They had a great coder that worked on the project, he had put in work as a contractor for a few months, and due to the quality of his work he was hired in full time. After two months he simply stopped showing up to the office.

An investigation turned up the following interesting items. His account had accessed all files including source code to *all* cellular projects - in that he had apparently downloaded a copy of everything. He had committed a large amount of contributions to the project he was assigned to. None of his paychecks were ever cashed. A wellness check to the house he had rented was performed and the house was completely empty. Per the landlord he'd paid for 6 months rent in advance in cash. Apparently he never physically moved in. No record for him nor his social security number seemed to check out. The guy was a ghost.

I was asked about recommendations on future prevention by friends who worked there - no idea how far they got in their investigation, if backdoors were ever found or even existed, or if the Feds were ever involved. The punch line? This was probably a couple of decades ago.

This shit is real, and it has been going on for a long time.

@skyglowberlin Ah, now I understand. But as it's also allowed to park on roads under certain circumstances, they are also included in this law. That's why the article alerts about this fact, because it affects the residents parking on roads all night, e.g. in front of their house.

@skyglowberlin Part 4 also refers to streets inside villages, what's exactly meant with the topic in the article, that you then need to have at least one light on the side facing the road, when you park on the edge of the road and there are no street lights on. So what is the question?

@skyglowberlin It seems that on this spots it's required by law, on street sides as far as I know, because there's also continuous traffic on the street. Some decades ago, this law was well-known in germany, when there were not so many street lights at night, but now the law might be forgotten and this is why it had called attention by the newspapers.

@friedi Und als weiteres Detail aus meinem "Erfahrungsschatz": Auch in der IT - meinem Berufsbereich - war es zumindest z.B. bei der CeBIT so: auch wenn man einen technischen Beruf machte, dachten die Leute, man wäre als Frau dort zur Bespaßung und um den Besuchern "gewisse Körperteile unter die Nase zu halten". Also ist das Ganze leider nicht auf die Handwerksbranche beschränkt, aber erfahrungsgemäß ist mir diese Branche leider auch als Kunde bisher am negativsten aufgefallen.

@friedi Schlimm, dass sich das "heutzutage" immer noch nicht geändert hat. Ich habe selbst mit 14 das Haus meiner Eltern mit gebaut (und nein, nicht dort die Gardinen aufgehängt, sondern Steine geschleppt, Heizungsrohre geplant und verlötet usw.) - eine wertvolle Lernerfahrung - und warum sollte man sich als Mädchen / Frau nicht für solche Themen interessieren? Man schaue sich nur mal die YT-Kanäle von "Laura Kampf" oder "Get Hands Dirty" an. Aber als ich später bei meinem Vater im KFZ-Gewerbe mal bei einer Inventur von dessen Arbeitgeber ausgeholfen hatte, bin ich von einem seiner Kollegen jeden Tag mehrmals gefragt worden, ob ich mit ihm unter die Dusche gehen will, und da war ich noch nicht erwachsen. Ich hatte wirklich gehofft, dass das "heuzutage" nicht mehr so üblich ist.

They state that customers "contractually consent" to such use, but good luck finding it in their Terms of Service. There also doesn't appear to be a way to withdraw consent, but I may have missed that.
