i always feel slightly like i’m going insane when i encounter one of those headlines that’s like “here’s why january 6th still matters, all these years later”

the amount of time that’s passed since then doesn’t even yet add up to the duration of trump’s term in office; and #january6 is likely one of the most consequential events in the history of the US.

@philip_cardella @tristansnell very good to know about the scholarly discourse — I think broader public discourse is still being pretty unduly shy about it (thanks in no small part to the largest media corporation in the world incessantly pumping out far right disinfo); but I guess they probably will be until it’s too late.

additional context: #HenryFord was also a raging antisemite whose propaganda was admired & emulated by #Hitler & the #Nazis

on the occasion of his 75th birthday, through their consul in Cleveland, Ohio, the Nazi regime bestowed on Henry Ford the Grand Cross of the German Eagle, the highest award granted to foreigners by the German government.

@philip_cardella @tristansnell yeah tbh after posting that I thought even “authoritarian” is still too abstract. at the very least it would need to be “far-right authoritarian” — but in the long view, I don’t think anyone is gonna seem hyperbolic for calling it fascist. (and tbh, all current soft pedaling of that term seems like political caution / negotiation)

@philip_cardella @tristansnell seems like sort of an “all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares” type situation.

i think i agree that it would be useful if it were articulated more precisely as autogulpe or (imo even more accurate) authoritarian / fascist putsch. https://infosec.place/notice/AdXvf4sqrlBu0Zj9lo

@tristansnell i understand why the term gets used, but tbh i think #insurrection is a bit too abstract.

#Jan6 was a #fascist #Putsch.

it’s interesting that #JoeRogan, a media grifter deeply invested in smearing the left, can recommend a book like #Chaos - which unsympathetically explores the US govt’s efforts to smear the left.

then again i wouldn’t attribute a ton of reading comprehension to that guy.

@jupiter_rowland thanks for this, really great little history! i’ve tried friendica but this makes me curious to experiment with hubzilla a little.

i think i was messing around with identica / statusnet stuff in 2010? i can’t recall the exact timeline with that extinct software, but iirc it started before statusnet was called that maybe?

i honestly could not fucking stomach the fact that so much of the US media was treating discourse alleging #antisemitism from a fascist-propaganda-spreading #maga pol like #EliseStefanik with such credulity.
historically shameful. https://mastodon.social/@tzimmer_history/111688707441528074

the rebranding of #libertarian from its anarchist communist roots to its US authoritarian, hyper-capitalist connotation… really impressive far-right propaganda victory.

@flexghost definitely - around the same time, one of the main local alt right fascist mover-shakers, Joey Gibson (“patriot prayer” founder), had begun speaking at the mooneys’ “rod of iron” festival events.

@flexghost i’d never encountered WT prior to like 2017, & its branding momentarily fooled me a couple times (not into sharing anything, only mistaking it for a real news org for a minute); which made me permanently annoyed by it.

when i found out it was started by the mooneys, nothing ever made more sense.
