Maybe one thing that’s nice about popular horror is it elaborates very specific circumstances of revulsion which may still be generic.
There’s a lot of directly experienced horror that gets experienced in disparate registers, and I think that feels uncanny and alienating to one another.
The Red Scare worked so well that otherwise fairly intelligent US writers are saying “neighborism”.
