@foone .MOV is a container, can you specify the codec for QuickTime in ffmpeg? Apple Video came with QT1, Cinepak with QT1.5.

MPEG-1 was added in QT2.5, so probably it, MPEG-2, and MJPEG should not be available, either, on QT 2.0 for windows.

what's be really cool (and I understand there's a lot of reasons why this would be a nightmare to actually implement) would be a tool like ffprobe that telled you the ffmpeg command that'd produce a given format of video, based on an example file

my example file lists as "Apple QuickTime movie (unoptimized)" but my created files are "ISO Media, Apple QuickTime movie, Apple QuickTime (.MOV/QT)"

@foone If you have a file from that era that does play, just looking at the codecs used in it could get you close.

You’d need a copy of Video Cleaner Pro and launch it in whatever operating system you can (maybe Windows in a 32-bit environment like Win98 emulated, otherwise MacOS 9 should be there, in fact PowerPC OS X should also be an option)

It’s the same as Handbrake but older and commercial. Apple Compressor is the same sort of thing.

What intermediate format to feed it though … um … it was the age of DivX so the dawn of H.264 … might have to settle for MPEG-4 part 2. Probably still a MOV container. Best to get it to the same resolution and frame rate that Cleaner Pro says Cinepak can max out at.

As for bitrate, just max it out each time. The codecs will tell you where they can reach. It’ll be surprisingly modest for our current expectations. One megabit per second will be massive.

It was the reason why AVI files were such a pain, too. You could put Intel Indeo into AVI or Cinepak, but Indeo looked better. However after a while only VLC knew what to do with Indeo. Once DiVX and MPEG-4 were invented, nobody cared about Indeo anymore (and OGG fixed the stupid limits of AVI, like no b-frames, well not officially … DiVX hacked it something ugly)
