TIL Minecraft requires a freaking MS account. I thought it wasn't that bad so we proceeded to create one, but it turns out that if you want to create a child account (based on birth date, to avoid adult ads and shit) you as an adult *also* need a MS account that would be of course immediately connected to your childs account which I assume to be a gold mine for advertisers.

Seriously, fuck #AdTech!

(I also wonder if this is legal in the EU?)

@buherator Pokemon Go works the same way. Maybe Google Accounts as well, but we already had our own accounts, and Family Link is pretty good, so we do not mind that one.

@gaborudvari well I do mind and I find it disgusting that entire families are made to sell their PII if their kid wants to play a game along with their friends. And yes, I'm willing to pay for an option that doesn't sell my kids personal data, but apparently this is not an option.

@buherator If you do not need Minecraft specifically, you can use and . It is pretty close featurewise, my kids are watching Minecraft videos, and then they try the same in Voxelibre, and it works.

@gaborudvari Great tips, thanks! I'm experimenting with minetest rn but frankly I have no idea what I'm supposed to do so can't really gauge the feature parity either :D

Luanti is kind of confusing IMO. Sounds like you have it installed already but if not, see this: https://docs.luanti.org/for-players/getting-started/

Once it's installed you start it up and click on the Content tab (it shows a list of what all mods you have already installed), then click the Browse Online Content at the bottom. That's where you can find and install different games and mods.

Once there, click the Games tab and click on VoxeLibre (a minecraft clone), which opens its page where you can read the details and reviews. Click the Install button there.

Once that's done you can click Back until you get back to the Main Luanti menu. Click the Start game tab and you'll see icons for whatever games you've installed in a bar at the bottom.

Click the VoxeLibre game icon and in the Select World list you'll see all the worlds you have for that game, if any. Then click New and just leave all the default settings for now. Finally click Play Game to start playing. It should work pretty much the same as Minecraft.

Later you can try other games and mods. Whenever you open Luanti you will select the icon for which game you want to play and the Select World list will show the worlds you've made for that game.

Have fun!
