Our team explains Thundermail and Thunderbird Pro
(what are they? why develop them?), the values behind them, and why the core desktop and mobile apps will never be behind a paywall. Read more and get the facts beneath the hype: https://blog.thunderbird.net/2025/04/thundermail-and-thunderbird-pro-services/
@rainyday @thunderbird no. Servers will be in the EU. Likely Germany to start. Not sure what other EU countries we will host in. Will post more on this soon.
@thunderbird I was recently wondering if this was going to be a thing at some point, glad to see it!!!
@rainyday @thunderbird our goal, first and foremost, is to protect user data.
@thunderbird really wish you would come out with an iOS version of thunderbird.
@saintfrancis We've just hired our iOS developer, and the repository will be going public soon. So it's in the works!
@ryanleesipes @rainyday @thunderbird
Do you know of any plans to make it HIPAA compliant?
@thunderbird with a feature like calendar being part of the suite will calendar be coming to Thunderbird on Android?
@paulhullford Thanks for asking! These are two separate products, and right now, there's no timeline for a built-in calendar on the Android app. But a good way to show support is upvoting suggestions like this on Mozilla Connect: https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/calendar-support-on-thunderbird-mobile/idi-p/76394
@CyborgZeta We're so glad to hear that! We'll have posts out soon with more details on the different products, what will be in them, and how they'll work with the mobile apps. We'll share links to them here as they're posted.
Excited to hear about this. More than willing to pay for accounts, assuming it has the following features:
1) Servers hosted in a privacy-respecting country (ie. not the US) - I believe @ryanleesipes has already mentioned it will probably be Germany
2) Bring your own domain support - I believe it's been mentioned this will be a launch feature as well
3) SSO support (SAML/OIDC)
Any idea when the beta will launch?
@ggiesen Thanks so much for the thoughtful feedback! Thundermail is still in early stages, and so if you've signed up for the mailing list at https://thundermail.com/ you're pretty much set! We're planning for some deep dive blog on each of the services, and we'll definitely be sharing those here once they're out.
