Don't fix what isn't broken: https://www.tomshardware.com/desktops/indiana-bakery-still-using-commodore-64s-originally-released-in-1982-as-point-of-sale-terminals

In my professional opinion this is the best malware protected setup I have seen for years.

@masek when heart bleed happened I contacted the IT folks who “secured” the site I was in charge of. They told me not to worry bc the version of bsd we were using was insanely old.

@masek What happens in case of a hardware failure? Maybe a solution based on Raspberry PI/Linux would be a better choice.

@ip6li @masek Probably simply swap in another C64 that they got for free or paid $5 at a garage sale.

@fredbrooker @masek I love the combo of ancient computer with modern flat-screen monitors. Sleek!

@hyc @fredbrooker I would like to know how they connect the C64 to the monitors. I would like to use my C64 once on my 85‘‘ TV set 😁. People tell me that this is mor difficult than it sounds.

@masek @fredbrooker older C64 just had composite video out, later upgraded to also have Y/C which can be fed into an S-Video cable. https://www.c64-wiki.com/wiki/A/V_Jack

@masek @fredbrooker easy enough to convert that to HDMI for a modern display. I just found this on AliExpress:

@hyc @fredbrooker Those if the C64 community say: most create shitty output or none at all. There was a company with good converters, but they went out of business.

@hyc @fredbrooker Unluckily it lists the N64 but not the C64. The Vic20 is listed though, that increases the chances. I‘ll check it with some sources.

@masek This is brilliant and why, I think, “retrocomputing” as a whole is popular amongst techies nowadays.

No viruses
No ransomware
No constantly changing UI for users to relearn
No spyware/adware
No vendor “collecting data”
No need to buy continually more powerful hardware to run continually more bloated OSes and applications
No software written by sociopaths
And the list goes on

More companies should do this if they are at all capable of doing it.

networking? Serial cables.

XMODEM is the best firewall
