I think what concerns me about big tech companies buying reactors is that those companies tend to focus all their energy on next quarter's profits over boring things like the long-term viability of the human species.
@egypt Indeed that is their fiduciary duty, well of the officers of the company. The owners of the company set the terms and memoranda and the government sets the parameters within which they can operate. The people elect the government, for now.
Also, I kinda wish there were more organizations interested in supporting the long-term viability of the human species. And fewer in active opposition.
@egypt A problem in general as we approach the carrying capacity of the planet: so far our best ideas, economically, seem based on exponential growth...
@egypt yeah, not looking forward to seeing the culture clash between the notoriously regulated energy industry and the notoriously unregulated tech industry.
@egypt @hacks4pancakes "move fast and break things" does not mix well with nuclear reactors
@egypt
Theyβre also not known to be champions for worker safety or environmental protections.
@egypt I'm thinking back to the old "MALTHUS WAS RIGHT" bumper stickers popular in the 80s and early 90s, which I haven't seen in a long while...
I'm sure they have good plans for long-term handling of the waste products.
We should just trust them, of course!
