I keep seeing the "cars replaced horses" thing related to "AI."

People keep comparing "AI" to cars (positively) without thinking about the fact that cars were forced on people (GM bought up and destroyed tram lines, there were massive protests, etc), and are the primary driver of climate change that is currently on track to make complex human society impossible. Meanwhile, cities that weren't destroyed for cars, or that have reversed most of the damage, are some of the most desirable places to live.

Maybe we could take the car analogy as a warning. Maybe it could be a reminder to think about how forcing technology on people against their will can reshape society in a profoundly negative way.

The answer for cities has been to right-size transit. Eliminate cars wherever possible, maintain emergency vehicles and mobility aids, and find more efficient alternatives (bikes, trams, metros, and trains) where possible. I feel as though we can extrapolate from the metaphor.

We do not have to repeat the mistake of reshaping society around a single, oversimplified, solution in order to benefit a tiny minority. Perhaps we can actually choose the right technologies based on use cases, rather than hype or dogma.

Cars didn't replace horses. Cars replaced walkable cities, tram lines and mass transit, and children playing in the streets.

"Cars replaced horses" to the benefit of a small group of elite men, at tremendous cost to literally everyone else. When people say, "AI is the new 'cars replacing horses'" they are saying something very specific about their privilege and intentions.

Edit: I write AAA, but it should have been GM and related companies. Look up the "General Motors streetcar conspiracy." And yes, that means that "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was actually based on real events that you didn't realize were real.

ATHENS/WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) - A passenger was partially sucked through a dislodged window ​on a Ryanair (RYA.I) Boeing 737 flight shortly after takeoff from Thessaloniki in Greece on Friday, two airport sources said, forcing the aircraft to make ‌an emergency landing.

The plane was scheduled to fly from Thessaloniki to Memmingen airport in Germany but returned to Thessaloniki "when a passenger window dislodged inflight," Ryanair said in a statement. [...]

Serbian media quoted a passenger telling Radio Thessaloniki that the man's head and shoulders were outside the ​aircraft before fellow passengers pulled him back in.

But don't worry — the plane didn't just decide to fall apart. It was its engine that just decided to fall apart.

Local media in Greece reported that a piece of engine broke off and smashed a window early in the flight, causing the cabin to decompress. The two airport sources with knowledge of the incident relayed the same details to Reuters.

The front of an engine hardly ever falls off:

A similar incident occurred in 2018 on another Boeing 737 NG. A fan blade in the engine of a ​Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 NG broke and caused a broken window that partially sucked out a passenger who was killed. ​The 43-year-old was the ⁠first person killed in a U.S. passenger airline accident in nine years.

After that incident, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board called on Boeing to redesign the fan cowl structure on 737 NG planes. There had been an engine failure on another Southwest 737 NG in 2016.

And when that happens, new fronts need to be installed ex post haste:

The FAA issued a directive in 2023 requiring the Boeing redesign by July 2028.

klimakatastrophe mal aus meiner perspektive: ich musste vor drei wochen das erste mal aus meiner dachgeschosswohnung fliehen (meine erste klimaflucht), weil es für mich und meinem hund wirklich gefährlich geworden wäre.

es wird nicht das letzte mal gewesen sein, d.h. meine wohnung erfüllt damit den zweck, für die ich sie gemietet habe, nicht mehr das ganze jahr über, tendenz sinkend.
