we have an incredibly mundane, low-stakes Mystery going on in our little apartment tower

Someone keeps breaking in (the lobby door is locked) just to sit in the stairwell, eat fast food and smoke weed. They order delivery to an address in this building, intercept it at the lobby, eat it and then leave the trash behind. Honestly, I don't think anyone would have noticed or cared if they didn't keep leaving the trash behind

My theory is that it's a young man who lives nearby and is scared of his mom seeing him smoke weed, so he sneaks into other buildings to be sure she won't see him.

he should be more worried about what happens when mom finds out he's been littering when there's public trash cans everywhere!

@0xabad1dea Put out a poster with a bounty for the courier who identifies the intruder. It may not worth for them (having a delivery quota, etc), but if the intruder sees the poster (s)he won't trust the couriers anymore.

@0xabad1dea Maybe your theory is right, except that they live in the building. Or are they actually breaking in?

@kauer they definitely don't live in the building. there's not that many residents here and people have reported seeing a rando hanging out in the stairwell. they order food to addresses who insist they definitely didn't place the order themselves

the break-in method is probably just ringing a random door and saying "Package for your neighbors!" which happens constantly for legitimate reasons and would have a virtually 100% success rate during normal hours

@0xabad1dea have you considered putting a trashcan in the lobby and fishing payment ticket ?
Something playful like https://flyingtiger.com/fr-fr/products/milk-carton-bin-3068241 might work best

@gkrnours we have the receipts. they're just ordered to random little old ladies who say they definitely didn't order Bob's Munchie-Grandos

@0xabad1dea I kinda expected they would put their own name on the order for ease of pick-up.

good luck with your mystery :)

@gkrnours not really necessary, if you're inside the locked building of the delivery address waiting for it, the delivery guy isn't going to be too worried about fraud.

@syn I have not personally encountered him. I just know other people say "oh yeah I saw a guy I didn't know in the stairwell? and then we found trash where he was sitting"

like, this is something that is, just now, being established as a pattern and not a one-off incident and being shared with the group chat for vigilance so we can collectively get this guy to knock it off

@0xabad1dea no basements in a country made for bicycling? where do you store your bikes

though considering the fact that the Sea thinks that the Netherlands should not exist and the Netherlands is pouring inconceivable resources into proving the Sea wrong, it makes a bit of sense

@me on the sidewalk, mostly

usually, what happens is that the ground floor serves "basement" purposes (storage, boilers, etc) and there are no apartments on that level.

there *are* underground bike garages, but like, ones owned by cities, who can afford the maintenance cost of having to constantly pump it.
