So, apparently AI companies are now buying up books and destroying them after feeding the content into the machines.
Straight up distopian. 😡😡🤬

1. Libraries and archives have to be protected at all costs, now more than ever.

2. Buying up out of print books related to your special interests is now a public service.

@TarkabarkaHolgy I was feeling good about the 5 books I picked up at a thrift store before, but now, keeping them on my bookshelf, I feel like I’m guarding a treasure from pillaging orcs.

@TarkabarkaHolgy A source would be nice. Not that I have any time for AI companies, but it *may* be that they are slicing the spines off books to allow them to be fed through a sheet-feeder for scanning. If that's the case, they would be destroying one copy of any given book. Which is offensive enough, but not the same as buying up and destroying multiple copies of the same book.

@kauer one each, probably, but multiple companies doing it to thousands of books. And some of those are already hard to find.

@TarkabarkaHolgy I don't feel bad anymore about buying as many books as I can about Maltese history, folklore, and culture now if the alternative was them being shredded :/

@scutajar Right!

I am still angling for the Maltese Mythology books, but they cost a fortune to order here...
